SPEED READING TECHNIQUES
SPEED READING TECHNIQUES
Most people learn to read the way young children read - either letter-by-letter, or word-by-word. As an adult, this is probably not the way you read now - think about how your eye muscles are moving as you read this. You will probably find that you are fixing your eyes on one block of words, then moving your eyes to the next block of words, and so on. You are reading blocks of words at a time, not individual words one-by-one. You may also notice that you do not always go from one block to the next: sometimes you may move back to a previous block if you are unsure about something. How many of these reading irritations do you recognize in your current reading?
Regression - Re-reading the same information a second or even a third time
Sub-vocalisation - The sound of your voice in your mind as you read
Low Concentration - Low concentration and the mind wanders while you read
Word By Word - Focusing on one word at a time, move a space to the next word
Skimming - Skipping and skimming because you are running out of reading time
Word Reversal - Reading the words in the wrong sequence
Poor Memory - Quickly forgetting information that you have read
A skilled reader will read many words in each block. He or she will only dwell on each block for an instant, and will then move on. Only rarely will the reader's eyes skip back to a previous block of words. This reduces the amount of work that the reader's eyes have to do. It also increases
the volume of information that can be examined in a period of time.

FAQ about Speed Reading:
What is speedreading?
Speedreading is a way of reading faster and understanding more by training the eyes to see more at once and the brain to process ideas and concepts instead of individual words.
Does it work?
Thousands of people that we have taught for over 30 years think so! And we have hard data of their before and after testing as well as many testimonials to prove it.
How fast is the average reader?
The beginning reading speed is 210 words per minute with ranges from barely 100 words per minute to well over 400.
How fast can your graduates read?
The average ending speeds are about 1000-1500 words per minute with equal or better comprehension.
What about comprehension?
The comprehension for the average or below-average reader goes up. Those who already have excellent comprehension will just increase speed while maintaining high comprehension. Our brains can process information as quickly as the images change on a movie. Most people read
at the speed of speech or slower; causing boredom and mind wandering. Increasing speed decreases mind wandering and increases
comprehension.
How are you different from other speedreading courses?
We believe that using the hand is a crutch and covers up the page. We teach eye movements using peripheral vision to see more of the page
at once. These techniques work well on computer screens and printed materials. We have small, individualized classes. Like accelerated learning, we teach our students to use their whole brain, and to trust their subconscious. Unlike accelerated learning, we also teach reading
strategies for absorbing different kinds of materials.
If I learn to speedread, do I have to read everything that way? We simply give you additional tools to choose from when you read. We do not take away any method of reading that you already like. You can choose what reading tools to use depending on your purpose and the nature of the material.
What kinds of things can I speedread? We teach strategies for every kind of reading. We show how to instantly pinpoint just what you need to read, how to read general information 3 to 5 times faster, and a system for mastering detailed information that even includes a note taking method for future use.
Who usually takes speedreading? The only common denominator we have found is that it is usually someone who is preparing for the next step – getting ready for an entrance exam, a professional exam, a new phase of education or career. We get excellent readers who want the competitive edge and the poorer readers who need more ability and/or confidence to achieve their education or career goals.
Do you offer any courses on the Internet?
We do not. We feel that learning to speedread requires you to dramatically change a lifetime habit. To change a lifetime habit requires a good coach. The best way to have a good coach is in a personally taught class. We are good coaches.
